Jing and Screencast are both trademark programs owned by the Techsmith Corporation which was founded in 1987 by the current President of the company, William Hamilton. TechSmith has seven different screen capture products that are marketed in over thirty countries. The first product, Snagit, which is still widely used today, is a screen capture tool that allows the user to edit, save and share screen snapshots through e-mail or upload to a website. With Jing and Screencast, now the screen captures can become videos with sound that can be used for presentations, learning tools and much more! The company continues to remain competitive and update its software and has just added a Mac version of Snagit to its list of screen imaging products.
Check out William Hamilton's biography. You may be shocked to see what he majored in at Michigan State!

You may be wondering, what makes Jing and Screencast special? There are many different types of software capable of making screen captures. Some of the great features of Jing and Screencast are that they both have free versions and are user friendly so even the most technology challenged individuals can create a screen capture after viewing the short tutorials featured on the TechSmith support site. Jing offers the user the ability to create up to a five minute video with audio that can be shared through Screencast by assigning the video or screen capture a URL.

The TechSmith corporation realizes the potential of how their products can be used for education. Make sure to check out the TechSmith Education Community Blog that is in my blog list. One of the most interesting pages on the blog that I want to share with you is how a group of Educational Technology students from Michigan State University participated in a challenge to create nine different screencasts in only 10 minutes!
